This course introduces the processes of collecting, storing and processing data. In an increasingly datafied world, this course highlights the impact of so-called 'data shadows', which refer to interests, goals, presuppositions, values and assumptions that shape data. You will learn how the generation, processing, dissemination and utilisation of data are subject to negotiation processes between different actors, and influenced by existing power relations. You will then apply your knowledge to a hands-on data project.

By the end of the course you will be able to:
● Understand the processes of producing and constructing data
● Consider ethical implications of different processes of data production
● Identify different data types on a technical level
● Acquire skills in preparing, analysing, and interpreting data
